Do you know someone that deserves our annual award?
Good breeders are recognized in the show ring, outstanding bulldogs qualify for the Bulldog of the Year award, but what about those that work quietly behind the scenes, ensuring the welfare of this breed is safeguarded. We know that there are many people outside of the rescue service that really care about bulldog health, welfare and reputation and it is these people that we are looking for. If you know someone that has gone that one step further in really caring for their breed - then tell us!!
Nominations are taken from September through to July for our award which is awarded at our annual Bulldog Picnic.
Their actions must have directly benefited bulldog welfare – current members of the Bulldog Rescue Volunteer Network or the Trustees cannot be nominated.
The Trustee’s will make their decision in August

2009 When the trustees first decided that we needed a purpose built van our initial target was for £10,000. When we reached £9,000 thanks to PetPlan and the Jean Sainsbury Animal welfare trust, we decided to go and look at our chosen choice of van, the Citroen Nemo. To our dismay the drivers seat was far too high for Dizzy to get from his wheelchair to the van so we had to look at other models. The only suitable van was the AstraVan but despite Vauxhall giving us a massive 25% discount we were £6,000 short. Alan Russell has been a friend of Bulldog Rescue for many years, a widower who came into money later in life. When told about the problem his first words - without any hesitation was "I'll give you six grand". Many hugs and tears later we were able to put in our order for the van |

2008 We kept the winner of our third award secret as we knew the winners would probably not come if they knew they'd won. Peter Petchy and Beverley Savage come to the kennel in Midhurst at least one day a week to walk the dogs and clean out the kennels. Over the past year they have also donated a huge amount of money and equipment to Bulldog Rescue including a hose pipe, a store for the bedding and paint for the kennels and runs. They even take kennel washing home with them. They clean out ears and nose wrinkles on the dogs in residence and they have also offered a home to some of our more difficult dogs. They've covered weekends when I'm not around and have proved to be absolutely fantastic in all aspects of keeping the kennels clean and running smoothly. Without Peter and Beverly I don't know how I'd cope, especially this year when the number of dogs through seems to have increased. Peter and Beverley are very worthy winners of this award, with several nominations the trustees unanimously declared them as the most worthy winner for our 2008 award. A personal thank you is also posted here from me (Tania) - you guys are just fabulous. |

2007 In 2007 we awarded our second award to Nigel Holmes from Sheffield for his fund raising efforts made through out the year. Nigel spent almost every weekend stood outside of various superstores in the Sheffield area shaking a collecting tin. At the time of being presented with his award he had collected over £2000.00 - an effort that is very much appreciated. Nigel travelled all the way down to West Sussex on 2nd September 2007 to the annual bulldog picnic especially to receive this very special certificate. Thank you Nigel |

2006 This first award was presented to Susan Jay who the trustees felt has given a life time to the breed. Secretary to the London Bulldog Society, show judge and breeder, Susan gives almost every spare moment to the breed, attending almost every Breed Council meeting, supporting new comers to the breed and making herself available to members of the public at all hours of the day and night, I'm sure there's been many a time when getting up in the early hours to set up a London show has posed the question why, and I know that her first job following her release from hospital after her recent cancer scare was to get 400 show schedules in the post. But she does and always gives the bulldog breed 100% in everything she does. She was quite taken aback that she should be the one to win this first award and commented herself that she was unusually speechless, but she very much deserves it and we hope that Susan can continue to give the bulldogs all she has for many years to come. |
